I've had a bunch of time on my hands lately. I went through a bowl of lighters I have and decorated them. It felt good to combine all of these little collections I've accumulated over the years, instead of just throwing everything away. I used up some old stickers, glitter, rhinestones, beads. I put all the lighters in a glass vase, along with all the dead novelty lighters I can't seem to part with. So suck it, Martha Stewart.

I made more, but these are some of my favorites.

I grabbed the last ringholder at work before it sold out, and I was determined to get right the triangular netted pattern in the mirror black glaze I had tried months ago. I regretted blocking out every other triangle and it looked like I didn't add enough layers at the top.

So I decided to keep it clean and simple. I carefully, and painstakingly, made sure I had 3 coats on all the lines. I was also happy with the way I represented my name on the bottom with the black indelible pencil. But, this time, it was too much glaze!

GUH! I feel like Goldilocks! I'll find that sweet spot eventually!

For now, I think the two failed attempts compliment each other. Along with the mini pinched bowl in the same glaze (below), they fit in quite nicely on my dresser.

MY Comic Book Class @ OWL57

My classroom was held in the fine arts gallery on Thursday evenings. I made this sign for the door to limit interruptions during this time.

This semester I was given the opportunity to build a class for a group of little boys on the complexities of sequential art, as arranged by the Five Towns Jewish Community Center with Owl57. I was inventing this class from scratch, and was only given a few days notice prior to the first class to have the syllabus written. This was only the first of many trials and adversities on the way to the finish line.

The goal of our experimental 12 week course was to have a final product of one page completed. This is much different from our other children's fine arts courses, in which we complete 1 project every 2 weeks; each project focusing on one of many different medias, such as acrylic, watercolor, pastels, and clay building...

The class was exceedingly more difficult than other courses, as each student would be creating his own personalized story, and therefore would have to draw completely different characters and locations and require individual guidance.

As it turned out, the boys in my class couldn't have been more wonderful! The youngest one (David, 7) even did research and reading on making comic books before the class started! I was able to teach them much more difficult concepts than I had originally anticipated.

Every week I printed examples of different aspects of drawing and cartooning, such as head/body proportions, facial expressions, shadows, storyboarding, silhouettes and lettering. I completed a demonstration and they followed along on handmade (then photocopied) dittos I created for them.

I created personalized folders in the style of blank comic book covers for the boys to keep our notes together in. They were free to decorate, of course.

Here are the completed comics I scanned after they were inked. Obviously, not a complete comic, but they came out great! So completely unique and adorable! And the boys loved how their comics came out, and really want to take another class with me! They were all so smart and considerate, and had a genuine interest in the entire process of book making. Really, they were intimidating for me as an artist in a competitive field. I had the boys color in the comics for the last day, and they received Medals of Art from the 5TJCC.

The monkey is one of the clay projects we build with the students at Owl57. This was a lesson we taught from last summer with the visiting summer camp kids.

I used too much dark glaze, so you can't really see how I scratched fur all over. I should have wiped the extra glaze away from the top around the scores, since the clay fired brown instead of white. wah.

When I was little I used to wear the same costume year after year. I wore a felt cat mask with an all-black outfit. Easy. I wanted easy again this year. Apparently my mom threw away my favorite childhood costume away, so I set out to make myself a new one. This one is made from paper, wire mesh, modeling paste, paint, and some other secret ingredients. I think it looks pretty dope... but I'll be honest, its heavy as hell and doesn't breath like felt did.

I'm working on six or seven different drawings and paintings right now, so finishing any of them is a slow process. I have been teaching art classes at Owl57's AfterSchool Program for the new semester and I wanted to post a few of my favorite paintings and works-in-progress. They range in ages 6yrs to 9yrs.

"Central Park in Winter" I am assisting artist Jeff Webb, who instructs this particular class. He's a really interesting, great great guy.

These city drawings are an homage to a painting by Edward Sokol titled "Inside the City and Out" which is hanging in our fine art gallery. These are not finished yet obviously, but I think the drawings are just too cute!

I got jealous when I saw how much fun they were having so I made one of my own afterwards :)

I made a stuffed hand at JP's house last month. I was going to sew it inside out and flip it right side out again but the fingers were too narrow and would have torn the felt. But I like the seams sewn on the outside better because I can see all my handywork.

I wanted to put spots of color in here but I chickened out. I'm scared i'll screw it up so I scanned it now just in case. Then I realized it didn't matter if I colored it because I did it on the wrong paper. It was a spontaneous drawing that accidentally became involved. Maybe I'll do it again on better paper, but I really hate doing things over.

Now I know for sure my scanner is shit city. The shirt in this drawing was painted with neon gouache. I know it doesn't scan well in general, but I've had more success with other scanners getting closer to true color in the past. Anyway I was jotting down some opinions I had about art and how important the hand of the artist is to me when I drew this.
